We’re looking for:

3 Outreach Youth Workers

We have an exciting opportunity for 3 passionate and engaging outreach youth workers to deliver a new project across Lewisham and Southwark.

This post will require you to work away from the ‘The Somerville’ premises for the majority of your working hours, as you will provide a range of outreach engagement to young people and young adults by helping them to identity their interests and offering them information in regards to existing activities and organisations which may be of interest to them in the surrounding areas. You and your team will also be delivering a variety of activities yourselves in local parks, estates and other ‘hot spots’, directly engaging with young people and young adults who are at risk of mental health issues and being involved in anti-social behaviour, alcohol/drugs or associated to gangs.

The roles are for 16 hours per week and the salaries are:

  • Senior Outreach worker (£9,500)
  • Outreach worker x2 (£7,500)

These positions are for a fixed term period until 31st March 2021.

Person specification

  • Ability to communicate with a range of young people and young adults
  • Ability to tactfully defuse confrontational situations
  • Excellent listening and communication skills
  • Enthusiastic and passionate about helping young people and young adults
  • Excellent networking key skills
  • Able to write reports and professional on the phone and via email
  • Experience of working with vulnerable young people and young adults
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • A good team player
  • Good understanding of safeguarding and health and safety
  • A good understanding of equal opportunities
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Able to manage time and prioritise effectively
  • Good knowledge of Southwark and Lewisham boroughs
  • Knowledge of safeguarding
  • High level of enthusiasm and motivation

The key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Working as part of a team to design and deliver a range of innovative community outreach and engagement activities in Lewisham and Southwark boroughs
  • Developing and sustaining positive relationships with a range of people, including young people/young adults, residents, community leaders, local groups and organisations and local authorities
  • Recruiting and supporting young people/young adults to become volunteers and active leaders in their community, and ensuring that they remain engaged and involved;
  • Creating an ‘Plan of Action’ in order to reach targets
  • Speaking to young people/young adults in a respectful manner and discussing their options in regards to engaging in one or more activity
  • Having key involvement in briefs, debriefs and report writing
  • Networking with local organisations and creating a database
  • Delivering various activities and workshops

The successful post holder must have:

  • Recent experience of working in a community setting that has been affected by youth crime and or experience of working with young people with challenging behaviours. An NVQ/QCF in a related field would be desirable.
  • The ability to be creative and develop and deliver targeted workshops
  • Experience of mentoring/supporting young people through difficult period of their lives 
  • Ability to function in diverse settings and with a wide range of professional agencies
  • Be self-motivated, resilient, with excellent organisational/administrative and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of supporting volunteers
